WordPress 3.9 – named ‘Smith’ in honor of jazz musician Jimmy Smith, has just been released and offers a great range of refinements to the way it handles media along with other fixes and updates. You can download the new version here or update directly from your WordPress admin panel.
Once installed you’ll notice the following improvements have been made:
Improved visual editing
The updated visual editor has improved speed, accessibility, and mobile support, and you can paste into the visual editor from your word processor without having to clean up styling.
Easier image editing
Quicker access to crop and rotation tools allow you to edit your images while editing posts and you can scale images directly in the editor.
Drag and drop your images
Drag images from your desktop and drop them onto the editor.
Gallery previews
Galleries display a grid of images in your editor, similar to how they’ll appear in your published post.
Audio and video enhancements
Wordpress have added audio and video playlists to showcase your music and clips.
Widget and header previews
Now you can preview changes to your site’s widgets live in the theme, and the improved header image tool allows you to upload, crop, and manage headers while styling your theme.
